February 12, 2023February 17, 2023 Which NSAIDs cause edema? Which NSAIDs cause edema? Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) are popular over-the-counter medications used for pain and inflammation. They are a well-known cause of swelling due to salt retention. Why do NSAIDs make you retain water? NSAIDs promote sodium and water retention, and this has generally been explained by a reduction in prostaglandin-induced inhibition of both renal chloride reabsorption and the action of antidiuretic hormone. Which Nsaid has the least side effects? Ibuprofen ranked the lowest in terms of GI risk in nearly every study and had the lowest overall relative risk. Diclofenac had the next lowest relative risk (2.3), followed by diflunisal (RR, 3.5) and fenoprofen (RR, 3.5). BE Does ibuprofen cause fluid retention? NSAIDs can cause water retention and edema in some people. You may notice your ankles look puffy or your weight rapidly increases within a few hours of taking ibuprofen. Having all that extra water on board can exacerbate pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure or heart failure. BE Do all NSAIDs cause fluid retention? Because NSAIDs block the production of the COX-1 and COX-2 prostaglandins, renal side effects are not uncommon, occurring in approximately 1% to 5% of NSAID users. By inhibiting COX-2’s natriuretic effect, thereby increasing sodium retention, all NSAIDs carry with them the consequent risk of increased fluid retention. Which drugs can cause edema? Many medicines can cause edema, including: NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen and naproxen) Calcium channel blockers. Corticosteroids (like prednisone and methylprednisolone) Pioglitazone and rosiglitazone. Pramipexole. BE Why does ibuprofen make me retain water? Taking ibuprofen doesn’t increase body fat and it won’t make you eat more. However, it can affect your kidneys if you already have kidney problems or if you take it frequently for long periods of time. When your kidneys don’t function properly, you can retain water, which may appear to be weight gain. BE Why do anti inflammatories cause weight gain? NSAIDs do cause weight gain by mechanisms of fluid and water retention. Which is safest NSAID? Based on the research to date, it appears that naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox) may be less risky than other NSAIDs. Aspirin cousins. Consider trying cousins of aspirin called nonacetylated salicylates. These include salsalate (Disalcid) and trisalicylate (Trilisate). What is the gentlest NSAID? Celecoxib (Celebrex®) is an NSAID that only blocks Cox-2 receptors. They may be gentler on your stomach than other NSAIDs. Questions
